How to read a results recap

What dates, complete records and clear definitions tell you about a performance summary.

Start with the reporting period

A useful recap states exactly which dates it covers. A weekly total, a year-to-date total and a full-year total describe different periods and should not be compared as if they were the same.

Look for the complete record

A clear summary includes losses as well as wins, explains how pushes or voided entries are handled, and distinguishes settled results from anything still pending. Highlighting a few successful outcomes does not show the full picture.

Understand the measurement

Units are a way to express results relative to a defined amount. A unit total is not a dollar amount, a percentage return or a win rate. A report should explain its unit definition and calculation method before the total can be interpreted.

Keep the limits in view

Reported results and independently verified results are different. Look for supporting records and any corrections. Historical performance describes what happened during a period; it cannot establish what will happen next.
